Surfer vs Frase vs Clearscope: SEO Content-Optimization Pricing Playbook

Surfer sells documents by the year, Frase sells articles by the month, Clearscope sells drafts by the month — and both Clearscope plans cap drafts at 20 a month. This playbook prices all three at 5, 25 and 100 articles a month, with reproducible per-article math, 1-year and 3-year totals, and the allowance trap that decides your bill.

The one decision: how many articles a month, and what each one costs you

Surfer, Frase and Clearscope all sell the same job — take a target keyword, show you what the pages that already rank for it have in common, and score your draft against that pattern while you write. They charge for it three different ways. The difference is the unit priced: Surfer sells documents by the year, Frase sells articles by the month, Clearscope sells drafts by the month — and both Clearscope plans cap drafts at 20 a month.

Every figure below comes from the vendors' own pricing pages, read 8 November 2026. Where a vendor page does not label a figure, this playbook says so and gives the corroborating read instead.

At 5 articles a month Frase Starter is cheapest at $39 a month on yearly billing, $7.80 per article. At 25 a month Surfer Standard at $99 and Frase Professional at $103 are within $4 of each other. At 100 a month Frase Scale at $239 wins at $2.39 per article — and Clearscope has no flat plan that reaches 100 drafts at all.

What each tool actually sells

Surfer's core is the Content Editor: enter a keyword, and it builds live writing guidelines from the pages that rank — terms, word range, heading counts — and a Content Score that rises as your draft matches the pattern. Around it sit the SERP Analyzer, Content Audit, a Topical Map, and AI visibility tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Frase runs the whole loop in one place: research, a writer, scores, and an agent that drafts and publishes on approval. Content Guard watches pages for Google decay and proposes the fix, and the plan's article count is the only limit on what the agent drafts.

Clearscope is the narrowest of the three: keyword discovery, a content report built on deep analysis of the ranking pages, and a draft you optimize against a letter grade. It tracks queries across ChatGPT and Gemini and caps neither users nor projects. It does not write for you — no AI writer, no agent in the price.

The price ladders

Surfer prices five plans plus Enterprise on quote. Frase prices three plus Enterprise, with a 20 percent yearly discount. Clearscope prices two plus Enterprise, with no annual discount stated.

Two rows deserve attention: Surfer's AI Search Analytics at $82 a month buys 50 AI prompts tracked daily and 5 brand spaces, but zero documents — a tracking plan, not a writing plan. Clearscope Business at $399 buys reach and a dedicated account manager, and exactly zero extra drafts.

The allowance trap: a year is not a month

The number that decides your bill is the period the allowance runs over. Frase and Clearscope allowances reset every month: 10 articles a month on Starter means 10 in January and 10 in February, and an unused article in January is gone. Surfer allowances run by the year: 120 documents on Discovery and 360 on Standard and Pro are annual credits, and the 2026 reviews that checked the vendor page agree the whole allowance lands on day one and whatever is left on the renewal date is gone.

Effective monthly allowance (Surfer)=Annual documents12\text{Effective monthly allowance (Surfer)} = \frac{\text{Annual documents}}{12}
Discovery: 12012=10 documents a monthStandard and Pro: 36012=30 documents a month\text{Discovery: } \frac{120}{12} = 10 \text{ documents a month} \quad \text{Standard and Pro: } \frac{360}{12} = 30 \text{ documents a month}

Surfer's own pricing page does not label the period in the plan cards — the per-year reading is corroborated by four independent 2026 reviews of the same page, and the page's FAQ confirms annual plans are charged upfront for the entire year. A Standard subscriber who publishes 20 documents in the first quarter and 10 in each remaining quarter uses 50 of 360 and wastes 310. Our editorial analysis found the yearly lump helps only the team that publishes in bursts and can spend the credits before renewal.

Monthly cost at 5, 25 and 100 articles

The table picks, for each vendor at each volume, the cheapest plan that covers the volume with no add-ons, on yearly billing. One article means one optimized document on Surfer, one article on Frase, one draft on Clearscope.

Cost per article=Monthly plan priceArticles per month\text{Cost per article} = \frac{\text{Monthly plan price}}{\text{Articles per month}}

At 5 articles a month: Surfer Discovery $49 / 5 = $9.80; Frase Starter $39 / 5 = $7.80; Clearscope Essentials $129 / 5 = $25.80. At 25: Surfer Standard $99 / 25 = $3.96; Frase Professional $103 / 25 = $4.12; Clearscope Essentials $129 / 25 = $5.16 before add-ons — 25 drafts is 5 over the 20-draft cap, so the real Clearscope figure is $129 plus add-on drafts. At 100: Surfer Peace of Mind $299 / 100 = $2.99; Frase Scale $239 / 100 = $2.39; Clearscope $529 / 100 = $5.29 on the page's $50-per-10-draft-block reading — the page lists the $50 rate beside a 10-to-500 quantity selector but does not label the block size, so treat that $529 as conditional and confirm the block in-app. Run your own volume through our pricing calculator before you commit.

Per-article cost at full use, and 1-year and 3-year totals

Full use means spending every unit the plan allows, on yearly billing.

Clearscope Essentials$1,548240 drafts$6.45Clearscope
Clearscope Business$4,788240 drafts$19.95Clearscope

Surfer Pro is the caution in this table: $6.07 per document at full use against Standard's $3.30, for the same 360 documents. The extra $83 a month buys daily AI-prompt refreshes instead of weekly, 5 brand spaces, internal linking, content-gap and cannibalization reports, and 2 more seats — none of which adds a single document.

One-year and three-year totals at the three volumes, yearly billing:

1-year total=12×monthly price (yearly billing)3-year total=3×1-year total\text{1-year total} = 12 \times \text{monthly price (yearly billing)} \quad \text{3-year total} = 3 \times \text{1-year total}

100 articles a month$3,588 / $10,764$2,868 / $8,604$6,348 / $19,044Vendor pages

The 100-article Clearscope totals are conditional on the $50-per-10-draft-block reading: $1,548 plus 8 blocks at $50 a month for 12 months is $6,348 for one year, and $19,044 at three years — more than double Frase Scale's $8,604.

Annual billing: the rollover trap

Surfer's annual document credits do not roll over. The 2026 reviews that checked the vendor page agree the full allowance lands on day one and whatever is left on the renewal date is gone — 310 unused documents on Standard is $1,023 of yearly-billed value evaporating at renewal. Never buy the yearly plan on the annual document count; buy it on the monthly rate you will actually use, and set a calendar reminder for the renewal date.

Briefs, scores and AI visibility: what the money buys

Price per article is only half the comparison. The other half is what the tool does before and after the score.

Paying for the tool: the part the pricing page never shows

For a US business, the vendor is a supplier like any other: collect a W-9 from a US vendor or a W-8BEN from a foreign one before the first payment, keep the EIN or SSN or ITIN on file for the 1099 trail, and pay by card, Wire or ACH. Clearscope invoices yearly custom plans on request. A non-US buyer pays the same USD price plus whatever FX spread the card applies. An LLC, S-Corp or C-Corp books the subscription as software expense in the month it is used, not the month it is charged, so the upfront annual charge needs a prepaid schedule. Judge the spend on CAC and LTV: a $103-a-month tool that produces 40 scored articles is $2.58 an article. Track the spend in a CSV export from the card or the vendor's API — Frase exposes API, MCP and CLI requests from 5,000 a month on Starter.

Who should pick which

Pick Surfer Discovery or Standard if your work is a steady stream of articles and you want the strongest live score while you write, with AI visibility tracking from Standard upward. Standard is the honest default for a small team: 30 documents a month, 3 seats, plagiarism checking, and 25 AI prompts refreshed weekly for $99 a month on yearly billing.

Pick Frase if you publish at volume and want the agent to do the drafting. Starter at $39 is the cheapest way into scored content up to 10 articles a month, and Scale at $239 is the cheapest per-article price here at exactly 100 articles a month.

Pick Clearscope if your team is large, your volume is low, and the report quality matters more than the price per draft. Unlimited users on a $129 plan is genuinely rare, and 20 drafts a month is enough for a team that publishes weekly. Do not pick Clearscope for volume: at 100 articles a month even the conditional add-on math puts it at $529 a month, more than double Frase Scale. For the strategy that decides how many articles you need, our programmatic SEO playbook for B2B SaaS prices the volume question before the tool question, and our technical SEO guide for decoupled apps covers the rendering work that no content score can fix.

Before you pay for a year of any of the three, run the trial on a real article you already rank for: optimize the same draft in Surfer and in Frase, and run the same keyword through Clearscope, then compare the scores and the briefs side by side. The tool whose guidance changes your draft the most is the one to buy.

Switching checklist

  1. Count articles per month for the last 90 days: under 10, the cheapest plan on any vendor covers you; over 30, only Peace of Mind or Frase Scale.
  2. Count seats and sites: 1 seat and 1 site fits every entry plan; more than 3 seats or 5 sites forces Frase Scale or Surfer Pro.
  3. List the features that gate your plan. Daily prompt refreshes, 5 brand spaces and internal linking force Surfer Pro; white-label reports and SSO force Frase Enterprise or Clearscope Enterprise.
  4. Check the allowance period before you pay yearly. Surfer credits are annual and expire at renewal; Frase and Clearscope reset monthly.
  5. Test the export. Download a scored draft and the usage history before paying, and confirm the export carries what you need to leave.
  6. Move one content cluster first, not the whole site. Optimize and republish five articles on the new tool, watch rankings and AI citations for 30 days, then move the rest.

Founder & CEO Insight — Enow A. Jovial

"A content tool is not priced by its monthly number. It is priced by the article — and the article is priced by how many you actually write. Buy for the volume you publish in a slow month, not the volume you dream about, and never pay a year upfront for credits that expire before you can spend them."
