Stripe Tax vs Avalara vs TaxJar: The Sales-Tax Automation Playbook, Priced Per Order

Three vendors, three different billing units: Stripe Tax charges per transaction, Avalara charges per state, TaxJar charges per order tier. This playbook runs all three against the same 200-order and 1,000-order months, prices the filing credits on top, and names the operator who should not buy each one.

Stripe Tax vs Avalara vs TaxJar: The Sales-Tax Automation Playbook, Priced Per Order

Every sales-tax comparison starts with the same trap: the vendors do not sell the same thing, so their prices cannot be compared line by line. Stripe Tax bills per transaction. Avalara bills per state. TaxJar bills per order tier, then per filing on top. A seller who compares only the headline number discovers the real bill in the second quarter, when the filing credits run out.

This playbook holds the business still and moves the vendor. Two scenarios: a small store doing 200 orders a month at a $60 average order value, registered in 3 states and filing quarterly; and a growing store doing 1,000 orders a month at the same $60 average order, registered in 6 states and filing quarterly. Every price below comes from a page opened during research on 7 November 2026, or is labelled as corroborated secondary where the vendor's own page would not load.

> [!KEY TAKEAWAY]

> The billing unit is the decision. Stripe Tax is the cheapest way to calculate tax and the most expensive way to ignore filing, because Tax Basic files nothing. Avalara is the most expensive at low volume and the cheapest at high volume, because a per-state price does not move when orders double. TaxJar is the predictable middle — until the filing credits run out.

Why Wayfair still sets the problem

The obligation comes from South Dakota v. Wayfair, Inc., decided by the US Supreme Court in 2018. South Dakota's law required out-of-state sellers to collect sales tax once they delivered more than $100,000 of goods or services into the state in a year, or engaged in 200 or more separate transactions for delivery into the state. The Court overruled the physical-presence rule from Quill and Bellas Hess: a business with no employees and no real estate in a state can still owe its sales tax.

Those thresholds became the template most states copied, with their own variations. Stripe's own tax pages state the practical range: registration thresholds for remote sellers run from $100,000 in sales or 200 transactions in most states to $500,000 in California, New York and Texas. The US sales tax economic nexus guide for digital products maps those thresholds state by state, and the Wayfair audit defense playbook covers what happens when a seller crosses one without registering, and the Stripe Tax nexus guide for 2026 covers the automation once registered. This playbook starts where those stop: once the obligation exists, which vendor carries it cheapest, and where each one stops carrying it.

The three billing units, stated plainly

Stripe Tax sells calculation. Tax Basic charges 0.5% per transaction on no-code surfaces — Checkout, Payment Links, Invoicing and Billing — where the business is registered to collect. Through the Tax API the price is a flat $0.50 per transaction, including 10 calculation API calls, with each additional call at 5 cents. There is no monthly subscription on Tax Basic, and filing is not included at any price on Basic. Tax Complete, the plan that files, starts at $90 a month on a one-year contract.

Avalara sells footprint. Its Select plans, launched in July 2026 for businesses under $50 million in annual revenue, charge per state per month: Core Compliance at $79 per state per month or $799 per state per year, and Core Compliance plus Streamlined Sales Tax services at $69 per state per month or $699 per state per year, with a three-state minimum on Core Compliance. Avalara's own pages confirm Select plans start at $69 a month. Above $50 million the price is quote-only, and registration outside the Streamlined Sales Tax states is a separate paid service.

TaxJar sells order tiers. Starter is $39 a month and Professional is $99 a month, both starting at 200 orders a month — Professional at 500 orders is $249 a month and at 1,000 orders is $499 a month, per two independent pricing reviews that agree to the dollar. Starter includes 2 AutoFile credits a year and Professional includes 4; every return beyond those credits costs $50 on Starter and $55 on Professional. Registration handled by TaxJar costs $299 per state as a one-time fee. TaxJar is owned by Stripe, which acquired it in 2021, and Stripe Tax files US sales tax through TaxJar.

Worked math: the 200-order month

Scenario A: 200 orders a month, $60 average order value, 3 states, quarterly filing — 12 returns a year.

Stripe Tax Basic on the no-code route:

$

\text{Monthly Cost} = \text{Orders} \times \text{Average Order Value} \times 0.005 = 200 \times \$60 \times 0.005 = \$60

$

That is $720 a year for calculation and collection, and zero filings. The same 200 transactions through the Tax API cost $0.50 each, or $100 a month — more than the percentage route, because at a $60 average order the 0.5% fee is only $0.30 a transaction.

Stripe Tax Complete at the $90 tier covers 200 transactions a month and 4 filings a year — but the scenario needs 12. Eight filings sit above the allowance, and Stripe's pricing page states only that additional fees may apply. The overage price is not published, so the true cost is unknowable until Stripe quotes it.

TaxJar Starter costs $39 a month, or $468 a year, plus filings: 12 returns minus 2 included credits leaves 10 returns at $50, which is $500 — an annual total of $968. TaxJar Professional costs $99 a month, or $1,188 a year, plus 8 returns at $55, which is $440 — an annual total of $1,628. Professional adds the real-time calculation API, exemption certificate storage, and 10 integrations against Starter's 3.

Avalara Select Core Compliance costs 3 states at $79 a month, or $2,844 a year billed monthly, or 3 states at $799 a year, or $2,397 a year billed annually. Managed Returns are included, so the filing count does not change the bill. Avalara is the most expensive option here by a wide margin: $2,397 a year on annual billing against TaxJar Professional's $1,628.

Worked math: the 1,000-order month

Scenario B: 1,000 orders a month, $60 average order value, 6 states, quarterly filing — 24 returns a year.

Stripe Tax Basic costs 0.5% of $60,000, which is $300 a month or $3,600 a year, for calculation alone. Stripe Tax Complete at the $430 tier costs $5,160 a year and covers 1,000 transactions a month with 12 filings a year — half the 24 this scenario needs, with the overage price unpublished.

TaxJar Professional at the 1,000-order tier costs $499 a month, or $5,988 a year. Filings add 20 returns beyond the 4 included credits at $55, which is $1,100:

$

\text{Annual Cost} = (\text{Monthly Subscription} \times 12) + (\text{Returns} - \text{Included Credits}) \times \text{Price per Return} = (\$499 \times 12) + (24 - 4) \times \$55 = \$5,988 + \$1,100 = \$7,088

$

Avalara Select Core Compliance costs 6 states at $79 a month, or $5,688 a year billed monthly, or 6 states at $799 a year, or $4,794 a year billed annually, with filing included. At this volume Avalara is the cheapest all-in option: $4,794 against TaxJar's $7,088 and Stripe Tax Complete's $5,160 before its unpublished filing overage. The per-state price did not move when orders quintupled; the per-transaction and per-order prices did.

At 1,000 orders a month, Stripe Tax Basic at $3,600 a year looks cheapest of all — until the filing labour is priced. Twenty-four returns prepared by hand cost more than the $1,194 gap between Basic and Avalara's annual price. Compare all-in totals or do not compare at all.

Exemption certificates: the B2B dividing line

Exemption certificates decide this comparison for any seller with wholesale, government or nonprofit customers. An exempt sale collected in error is a refund owed; a taxable sale left exempt without a valid certificate on file is an assessment waiting for an audit.

Avalara treats certificates as a product: Exemption Certificate Management digitises, validates and stores certificates, included in Select Core Compliance. For a B2B seller this justifies the per-state price.

TaxJar stores exempt customers on the Professional plan only, with an exemption type — wholesale, government, other — and exempt regions on the customer record. Starter has no exemption certificate management at all.

Stripe Tax handles exempt sales through product tax codes and customer tax IDs. But it is not an exemption-certificate vault: no digitisation, validation workflow or expiry tracking. A seller whose exempt customers are a rounding error can live with that; a seller whose exempt customers are a third of revenue cannot.

Filing coverage by state: read the credits, not the headline

Filing coverage is where all three vendors hide their real price. Count returns: a seller in 6 states filing quarterly needs 24 returns a year; in 10 states filing monthly, 120.

Stripe Tax Complete's tiers include 4, 12, 20 and 32 filings a year at $90, $430, $1,000 and $1,500 a month; beyond the allowance, the price is unpublished. Stripe files US sales tax directly from the Dashboard, powered by TaxJar, and automates filing in Canada, the EU under the non-Union One Stop Shop, and the US, with global filing in more than 90 countries through partners such as Taxually and Marosa.

TaxJar's AutoFile credits are the thinnest in the category: 2 a year on Starter, 4 on Professional. At $50 and $55 per additional return, a 6-state quarterly filer pays $1,100 a year in filing fees on top of the subscription. TaxJar does not participate in the Streamlined Sales Tax program.

Avalara's Managed Returns are included in the per-state price, so its annual total does not grow with the filing count. The offset is the Streamlined Sales Tax tier: at $69 per state per month, eligible sellers get state-sponsored registration in up to 25 SST states.

> [!FOUNDER]

> "Every vendor in this comparison will tell you their price is simple. Stripe charges a percentage, so your bill grows with your revenue. Avalara charges per state, so your bill grows with your footprint. TaxJar charges per order, so your bill grows with your volume — and then charges per filing on top. Buy the vendor whose bill grows slowest against your own growth."

> [!WARNING]

> Never sign a Tax Complete contract or an Avalara Select agreement on the monthly price alone. Stripe Tax Complete is a one-year contract, and its filing allowance — 4 filings a year at $90 a month — covers one state filing quarterly and nothing else. Avalara's per-state price excludes registration outside SST states, and TaxJar's subscription excludes every return beyond 2 or 4 a year. Get the filing count, the registration count and the overage price in writing before the first transaction.

Operator boundaries: who must not buy which

Do not buy Stripe Tax Basic if you need anyone to file for you — it files nothing. Do not buy Stripe Tax Complete if you cannot commit to a one-year contract, or if your filing count exceeds the tier allowance, because the overage price is unpublished.

Do not buy Avalara if you are registered in 1 or 2 states and do fewer than 500 orders a month — the three-state minimum makes it the most expensive option at that size. Do not buy Avalara above $50 million in annual revenue without a negotiated quote, because the published Select prices stop applying there.

Do not buy TaxJar Starter if you sell through an API, need real-time calculation at checkout, or have exempt B2B customers — Starter has no API access, no live calculation and no exemption handling. Do not buy TaxJar at all if you need VAT or GST. Run the monthly total through the tax estimator before signing, and keep the break-even discipline from the quarterly estimated tax guide beside it — sales tax and income tax run on separate calendars.

> [!TIP]

> Price the switch before you buy the first vendor. Export your transaction history, your registration list and your exemption certificates — the vendor that makes export hard owns your compliance history. TaxJar imports 60 days of sales data during its trial; test the import and one AutoFile return before the card is charged.

Execution checklist: choose in one afternoon

  • [x] Count the footprint first. List every state where you are registered, every state where you are near a threshold, and the filing frequency each demands. Multiply states by filings a year — that number decides the filing bill.
  • [x] Run both scenarios on your own numbers. Replace the $60 average order and the state counts with your own figures, and compute the all-in annual total for each vendor.
  • [x] Check the API route against your average order. Above a $100 average order, Stripe's flat $0.50 API fee beats its 0.5% no-code fee.
  • [x] Trial the filing, not the dashboard. Start TaxJar's 30-day trial and file one real return through AutoFile. Ask Avalara for the Select quote in writing.
  • [x] Get the overage prices in writing. Stripe Tax Complete filing overage, Avalara registration outside SST states, TaxJar returns beyond the included credits — three numbers that decide the second-year cost.
  • [x] Set the review date. Re-price all three vendors every twelve months or every time you register in a new state, whichever comes first.
